Voters living in the Dearborn Public School District will get to elect three of seven school board members on November 6. To help voters get to know the school board candidates, the District is providing a video of a candidate forum held in September.

The seats currently held by Mary Lane, Celia Nasser and Jim Thorpe are all up for election. Trustees serve as the board both for the school district and Henry Ford College, making Dearborn Public Schools the only preschool to grade 14 district in Michigan. School board members usually are elected to six-year terms, but November’s race includes one two-year position to fill the remainder of a seat vacated earlier.

Trustee Mary Lane was the only candidate to file for the two-year seat.

Running for the two six-year positions are Afaf Ahmad, Billy Amen, Khalil El-Saghir, Aman Fidama, Roxanne McDonald, Adel Mozip, Cynthia Parrelly and Jim Thorpe. The winning candidates will start their terms in January.

On September 25, the Dearborn PTA Council held a forum for the candidates at the District’s Administrative Services Center. Two videos showing the forum are available on the District’s YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/JO6ezpLPBZ8 and https://youtu.be/hSigfH8-lv8. The videos are done in two parts so YouTube will provide captions.

The forum video is also airing on the district television channel on Monday, Thursday and Friday at 10 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday at 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. District broadcasts are shown on channel 19 on Comcast and channel 15 on WOW.

To learn more about the candidates, voters can also check out local newspapers or visit the League of Women Voters election information site at www.Vote411.org. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 6.

Students do not have school on Election Day.

School board members oversee the operation of the district, including hiring and evaluating the superintendent. They also approve the Dearborn Public Schools’ budget, currently $301 million across all funds.
